The D&L CQB carbine is fantastic. It came at the same time that I was conducting training for some DHS/FPS contract security folks with their carbines (High Standard HSA-15s and a S&W M&P AR); They are not even in the same galaxy. | The
D&L AR-15 is an unusually robust rifle system that
incorporates a number of features designed to solve real
world problems faced by the armed professional. While
the marketplace is saturated with AR-15 style firearms,
the features of the D&L carbine are both noteworthy
and compelling. D&L's forward mounted rear iron sight
is available for instant use if your electronic sight
dies. This CQB iron sight system is compatible with handgun
training, making the carbine "as fast as a handgun,
accurate as a carbine." I fired 924 rounds during
my evaluation of this CQB iron sight and developed a real
comfort zone with the D&L iron sight system. Furthermore,
I never experienced a single malfunction with the carbine.
The reliability was due in part to Dave Lauck's extreme
duty AR-15 magazines. By the end of this test and evaluation
the D&L magazine had been used to fire more than 9000
rounds of ammo without cleaning, and without malfunction.
My late friend and designer of the M-16, Gene Stoner,
told me the M-16 magazine was designed for a service life
of 30 loadings. D&L's extreme duty magazine exhibited
neither visible wear nor malfunction after 300 loadings.
While not inexpensive, the D&L AR-15/M-16 magazine
is cost effective. They increase weapon reliability, thereby
improving mission effectiveness and operator survival.

D&L AR-15 handguard really appeals to me. It's handy
and it's tough, tough, tough. It's free floating and mechanically
locks to the receiver so it won't loosen even when the
receiver gets very hot. Competitors using D&L carbines
placed 1st and 2nd in an ITRC shooting course requiring
shooters to fire approximately 1100 rounds in about 40
minutes. This was in part due to the D&L handguard
design being able to remain functional while other handguard
designs failed. |

I am currently serving in the US Navy, and I have a job that requires me to use firearms on a daily basis. I work with many types of pistols, M-4 carbines, shotguns, and at least four different models of long range sniper rifles. I recently bought a DL Sports™ Professional Model 1911, and I can say without a doubt that it is the finest pistol that I have ever worked with. The accuracy, reliability, and durability are unparalleled. I have been carrying this pistol on a daily basis for the past 3 months in numerous operations support of OIF. This pistol is far more capable than our standard issue pistol (SIG P226), and it has proven it's reliability in very harsh desert conditions.
After receiving the pistol in early 2007 (and prior to leaving for deployment), I drove to Wyoming to meet Dave Lauck in person and spend a day training at the Small Arms Training Academy (SATA). During my seven years in the military, I have trained extensively at the Mid-South Institute, Olive Security Training Center, McMillan Shooting School, and numerous other military and civilian ranges around the country. The SATA is without a doubt the best facility that I have been to. The shoot house at the SATA is outstanding and it incorporates numerous steel and paper targets in challenging and realistic scenarios. I did one "lap" through the shoot house, and probably shot more rounds than during entire days of training at other shooting schools. The SATA long distance ranges are excellent. There is a 1800yd Known Distance range which allows for the "doping" of scoped weapons, in addition to numerous Unknown Distance Targets that can be placed at virtually any distance. Although I only spent a short amount of time on the long distance range, I believe that this range would be able to cover ANY and ALL training requirements for military sniper training. In addition to the shoot house and the long distance ranges, there is a several mile long walking/"pointman" course that allows shooters to test their pistol, carbine, and rifle skills at a variety of different ranges and scenarios. I have experienced several other "pointman" courses at shooting schools or during military training, and once again, the course at the SATA was the most challenging (and the most fun) course that I have seen.

Sorry I have been out of the net on missions. Can't go into details but things are going better than planned. So far we have tested the D&L Carbine with the 55Gr, 62Gr and the new 77Gr Black Hills. It has functioned flawlessly in all of the tests. Everyone loves how clean it stays even after 500 rounds. We have kept a log and the gun is at 2400+ rounds and we have had zero malfunctions. | Lauck's many
years of training have taught him how to build an AR-15 that works,
and one that can stand up under the literally scorching heat of intensive
rapid fire and cumulative abuse. Lauck's stock design places the comb
in exactly the right place to mate with iron sights or red dot optics.
The carbine had Lauck's heavy duty rear sight, as rugged as a monkey
wrench. The front sight is a heavy duty blade. The result is a bold
and quickly acquired iron sight picture. The muzzle was tipped with
a compact and extremely efficient recoil compensator. The carbine
was an impressive piece. The D&L test carbine got shot a lot,
including a couple weeks with a SWAT team. It had over 1000 rounds
through it before its first cleaning. It experienced no malfunctions.
In fact it never experienced a single stoppage of any kind in any
of the testing. Thanks in a large part to the extremely effective
compensator, we could get tight center hits with every shot at a rate
of 5-6 shots per second. The carbine had good balance, the weight
is just where it should be. The SWAT team commander said he never
shot an AR that came up faster or stayed on target better for fast
snap shooting. Rotating the D&L carbine 360 degrees on the axis
of the barrel still resulted in functioning without a hitch. At urban
rifle distances, the carbine can put bullets into a hole smaller in
diameter center to center than the diameter of a single bullet. In
addition to accuracy, we had 100% feeding and cycling reliability
over a great many rounds, and 1000 or more of those rounds were fired
without cleaning. |

Hey Dave,
I wanted to give you an update on my Professional Model 45 as well as my CQB carbine. As you know, I carry each firearm on patrol all the time. They are also my primary firearms for the Special Response Team. After two years with the 45, I have close to 50,000 rounds through the gun. The gun still cycles flawlessly and feels as smooth as it did when I first received it. It is a good feeling knowing that you don’t have to worry about the reliability of your gun at any time. The CQB carbine has the same report. Many rounds and no malfunctions whatsoever.
I just recently returned from the National SWAT Championships near Castle Rock, Colorado. Needless to say, no problems with the guns that receive many second looks from other officers. On one course, a precision shot was required. While every other shooter was using a heavy barrel .308 rifle, I used my CQB carbine. I was told later by range officers that I shot the target faster than any other shooter. The hole in the target was dead center.
On another occasion, I recently finished teaching two weeks of firearms training for my department. The other instructor at the class continued to tell classes that my D&L Sports™ pistol was the only 1911 that he has never seen malfunction.

The CQB carbine has performed incredibly from 50-500 yards. The locking iron sights give me a lot of confidence because they won't get knocked out of calibration any time. They are an incredible design. The carbine consistantly grouped 1/2" at 100 yards, and the optic worked in daylight and in dusk, and the extreme duty AR mags worked great, no problems. I really like the finger ring.

We don't often use such strong language to describe a firearm, but Dave Lauck incorporates features into his guns that are to be found nowhere else. |

| Unlike most other free-float tubes that can possibly "shoot loose," Lauck's is physically locked to the upper receiver and cannot loosen unintentionally. |
| The second eye catching item of D&L Sports™' Precision AR is the stock, again quite different from anything else on the market. The stock is constructed from thick walled aluminum for durability and light weight. |
| The upper and lower receivers are fitted with no discernable "play" between them. The trigger is a single stage unit with absolutely no creep or backlash and breaks like snapping a glass rod at about four pounds, although the trigger feels as if it were lighter. We were actually surprised when we measured the average pull weight. Lauck's selector switch is yet another enhancement. The switch has been lengthened and widened slightly to facilitate high speed operation, even with gloved hands. Another improvement is Lauck's antiwalk trigger and hammer pins, which differ from any others available. Instead of "circips" that fit over the end of extended pins and rub against the receiver and may come off in hard use, or pins that lock together and cannot rotate, Lauck's have dome shaped cap screws that lock down against the pins themselves, so the pins are allowed to rotate as they were originally designed. |
| Lauck's proprietary muzzle brake is a nine port design with six side ports and three ports on top. There are no bottom ports because this reduces dust signature when shooting from prone while at the same time minimizing muzzle rise, thereby enhancing rapid fire accuracy. |
| As if all this weren't enough, Dave Lauck even designs his own 20 and 30-round magazines. Original magazines have always been problematic in terms of reliability. During the Vietnam unpleasantness and afterwards, we loaded only 18 rounds into 20-round mags and 28 rounds into the 30-rounders to enhance reliability and feeding. The green followers with a longer front bearing surface to prevent "nosedives" was only partially successful and to this day, prudent operators still load 28 rounds into MILSPEC 30-round magazines. Lauck solves the AR magazine problem in several ways. First is a completely redesigned aluminum follower that absolutely will not nosedive or allow "bolt over cartridge base" failures to feed. The follower also has "filter tracks" that allow dirt and other contaminants to pass by the follower. Lauck also redesigned the magazine base by locking it firmly into position using screws to retain the heavy duty aluminum floorplate that doubles as a "pull ring" to facilitate pulling the magazine from a pouch and retaining it while reloading. It also can be used to withdraw the magazine from the firearm if it fails to fall free when the release is pressed. Lauck completely redesigned the 20-round magazine by incorporating a slight curve into the design in addition to the features we have already discussed. Although there have been earlier curved 20-round magazines, none has all the features of Lauck's, which have several patents pending. |

| Shooting the Precision AR brought no surprises. The rifle came with a 300-yard target that was amazingly tight - more in keeping with 100-yard groups from lesser rifles. We were admonished by Dave Lauck to use only the best match grade ammo available. He tested this rifle with Black Hills 77-grain long range .223, the current choice of military special operations forces. We also tested Hornady 55-grain TAP and Remington 62-grain match ammo. It is unfortunate that we had only a 100-yard range on which to test this rifle as it is capable of engaging targets at much greater distances. How far? One of D&L Sports™' Precision ARs was the first rifle to surpass Jeff Cooper's 20/20/20 challenge - 20 rounds in less than 20 seconds into a group of less than 20 inches at 1,000 yards! The rifle used to achieve this feat was identical to our test rifle and used Black Hills 77-grain match ammo. |

| From Iraq to Afghanistan, the current conflict has validated the 1911 .45automatic. Those who have them there cherish them. Some want them badly enough to pay for the very best. Built for combat, Dave Lauck's 1911 is smooth, accurate, and utterly reliable. The gun tested here is Lauck's Professional Model. The pistol uses heavy duty fixed night sights of Lauck's own design, some of the best that are out there. A special slot is cut for the front sight, with room for three locking screws, and absolutely lock the sight in place. In operation, " The feel is there". The guns trigger broke at a crisp 4 pounds. As is typical with Lauck guns, racking the slide was an exercise in smoothness that harkens back to the national match pistols of the past. I have had a custom Lauck pistol for years and it has proven itself to be a 1" gun at 25 yards. The test pistol fired three shot groups of the ammo it liked best into .65", and .90" at 25 yards. We put many hundred rounds through the pistol and there were no malfunctions of any kind. The melted and rounded edges of the Lauck pistol kept it from digging into my side during concealed carry. The rounded edges were a blessing. The Lauck professional model was comforting and comfortable. What premium would you pay for the kind of life insurance that keeps you alive? It's more expensive, but I'm worth it. |

David Lauck, owner of D&L Sports™, is considered by many as the Master of Modern Musket Making and his latest long gun creation, the Signature D&L CQB carbine is certainly a substantive example of this well deserved accolade.
Here we have a modern and improved version of a gas tube driven shoulder weapon based on an over 50 year old design that combines the best attributes of a magazine forward assault rifle, (if you were able to acquire a select fire version) a highly refined entry and room clearing tool and a precision fire instrument that is only limited by its ammunition. This is a sub MOA (minute of angle) long gun (when it is equipped with a precision rifle scope and ammunition) and it could perform admirably as a SPR (special purpose rifle). This carbine was equipped with the EOTech sight, which made it better suited for CQB activities than group shooting at distance. This is an extremely well balanced piece and it would make an outstanding patrol rifle for a well heeled police department or where an agency permits, for the police officer that will not tolerate anything but the finest personal equipment. Lets' take a look and see why this carbine is so special:
He is one man show and it takes Dave about 80-100 man hours to complete one of these beauties and each one represents a real labor of love. Along with his other long and short gun creation he only turns out a limited number of these a year. And, his quality control is practically maniacal.
Starting at its business end, its special contoured, 5.56 x 45 mm chambered 1:8 twist, stainless steel match barrel is crowned with Lauck's superb compact .97" muzzle brake / compensator. Its nine port design negates muzzle rise and recoil while minimizing ground disturbance when shooting prone. Like the rest of the carbine, the brake is colored in attractive, but business looking "ceramic tungsten." These compensators go a long way in the pursuit of the Holy Grail of weapons designers and almost eliminates recoil and muzzle rise. In fact, the Lauck design made emergency one handed shooting of the CQB carbine a cinch. Lauck designed his brake to be effective at reducing recoil and flash. Selecting proper ammo also controls flash signature. Exit gasses are redirected by these devices to reduce muzzle rise and to counter recoil forces.
The AR15 front sight stud is replaced by a fully adjustable .04" blade with a vertical tritium insert. It is the thinnest tritium augmented front post that I have seen and should be adapted to handguns whose front night sights are too thick for my preference. The blade type design greatly enhances durability over a post design. Because of the specially contoured barrel, Lauck can not only protect the gas system, but can move the front sight tower all the way to the front of the barrel. This gives the operator a shorter carbine barrel with a full length sight radius.
The full length, free floating Mannlicher style, "super duty" heavily perforated, two inch diameter handguard reminds me of the old .30 caliber, air - cooled Johnson A3 medium machine gun. It is mechanically locked into the receiver with eight robust screws and features a plethora of small holes for attaching Picatinny rails where you want them. The D&L carbine features a vertical foregrip and although it does not boast any electronics, its hollow Delrin tube can house an extra bolt assembly with firing pin in the event that one or both of these critical parts goes kaput while well "East of Eden."
Our current conflicts have proven that the way to improve hit ratios, better training not withstanding, is to employ optics. Nevertheless, I am an old iron man, iron ships, iron sights guy and D&L has one of the best adjustable rear sights on the market. My example was mounted on the forearm well forward of the optic, where it serves as a "co-witness" or back up sight. It is accessed by merely looking through the lower portion of the EOTech. In spite of its short radius, I had no problem scoring hits on any target at any range that I also engaged with the optic. Similar to a handgun's rear notch sight, it presents a crisp sight picture and has massive windage and elevation drums. Keep both eyes open and your target acquisition is quite fast and there is very little deterioration of your CQB capabilities if the EOTech quits. This sight will not lose its zero, because of its robust construction and is anchored to the rail by four sturdy screws. Once Lauck's forward mounted rear sight is zeroed, the zero is locked in place by multiple lock screws so the zero is not lost under rough handling conditions. Moving aft, my journey is pleasantly interrupted by the very prominent and popular 1x powered EOTech electro optical sight. I have found that with today's combat optics, you have to work at missing your target at typical combat ranges even when the threat is moving. Two CR123 batteries provide 1100 hours of life. Obviously, the illuminated reticle, which can be adjusted for various lighting conditions, enhances the soldier's marginal light fighting capabilities.
Fit and finish of the D&L carbine are excellent and there is no play between upper and lower receivers which translates into more consistent down range performance. Controls are standard, but have been modified for exceptional strength, reliability and safety. The safety / fire selector has been both enlarged and extended for easy on-off access, even with gloves when the carbine is held in the low or "British ready."
To increase the integrity of the CQB carbine and its components, D&L uses proprietary anti-walk trigger / hammer pins These generally ignored parts can contribute to weapons failure and Lauck has gone to great lengths to redesign them along with a solid AR-15 firing pin retainer that replaces the firing pin retaining cotter pin to prevent fracture and breakage.
D&L offers both fixed and adjustable stocks for its long guns. These rock solid, multi-compartmentalized, thick walled aluminum stocks feature a primary tube with a flat comb covered by a collar of neoprene to make it more comfortable for cold weather employment. This stock permits the shooter to position his dominant eye closer to the carbine's bore axis particularly when iron sights are used. The overall sturdiness of the carbine and its solid stock leaves me with the impression that it could deliver a series of butt strokes and smashes without much drama to its integrity. The butt's natural curve and non-slip butt plate lends itself to rapid mounts from the low or British and high or field readies. At no time during various shooting drills did the stock hang up on clothing. It also fit nicely into a chest hold for those who prefer to shoot from their body armor carrier in that manner. The secondary tube's compartment can be accessed via a large coin slotted threaded port cover located in the center of the butt plate and is ideal for housing cleaning gear. The short tube features an extended cap that can be manipulated by the bullet and neck of a cartridge case. It is ideal for carrying a bolt assembly or batteries. D&L's ergonomic Delrin pistol grips give you a choice between a smooth surface or memory grooves for finger placement and a recoil absorbing shoulder for the web of the hand. However, some of these custom items were developed through competition and Lauck runs an annual International Tactical Rifle Competition high volume carbine event where competitors fire 1100 rounds in 45 minutes. Having the most comfortable pistol grip in the business will stave off gunner's fatigue longer than other designs. No space is wasted and the grip's base is sealed by a hinged cover so that more gun goodies can be secreted within.
A variety of operational and training ammunition bullet weights ranging from 42-100 grains were included in the trials and it was determined that the 1:8 twist stabilizes all of them.
Several hundred rounds were fired and although D&L cautions against using anything but protected tip ammunition for reliability there was not one stoppage. Its superb reliability was attributed in part to the properly fitted and head spaced bolt carrier group and the TW25B lube that it was covered with. However the Achilles heel of many a select fire and semi-auto weapon is its magazines and the issue military 30-round sticks are noted for various stoppages. Steel magazines have been offered, but failures have occurred and the jury is still out on them, and then there are weight penalties to be incurred. True to form, Lauck has come to the rescue with his redesigned and strengthened 20 and 30 round magazines. These magazines, perhaps the most dependable in the world, have been thoroughly field tested under extreme conditions by independent end users and declared near perfect in reliability. Worthy of a stand alone article, suffice to say Lauck's magazines are visually distinguished from others by his unique ½ floor plate that is held to the magazine body by five large machine screws and topped with his signature "finger ring" for better retention and extraction from the magazine pouch. Flat bottom models are also available for prone shooters who like to stay close to the ground.
Conclusion - This is the most sophisticated and at the same time practical 5.56 x 45 mm carbine manufactured in the US that I have had the pleasure of working with. The D&L Signature CQB carbine is designed for the most serious professional, but would also be a wise investment for any level shooter who wants a firearm that will easily outperform and outlive the owner. |

| Dave Lauck has been in the custom firearms business for some 30 years, carrying on the family tradition of firearms manufacturing since the days of Colonial America. Lauck’s goal is to provide his customers with the finest, most reliable and accurate, practical and tactical firearms available using traditional craftsmanship coupled with state-of-the-art innovations. We have already evaluated several of Lauck’s custom firearms and when Dave contacted us about testing his CQB carbine, we jumped at the opportunity. Based on previous experience, we believe that D&L Sports™ produces some of the finest AR-type rifles available. We have seen a lot of these rifles in the last 40 or so years, beginning in Vietnam and, D&L’s product is about as good as it gets. We say this because Dave Lauck incorporates features into his guns that are not to be found elsewhere. Dave is a one-man shop. In the finest tradition of custom firearms production, he personally builds every firearm that bears the D&L logo. D&L’s AR-type rifles and carbines aren’t cheap—in the price range of $2,000 and up, so they aren’t for everyone. But for those who can afford the price of entry, D&L’s ARs are worth the cost. Elaborating on what sets D&L’s CQB AR apart will take some time, but the carbine really is different from almost every other AR-type CQB carbine available except in its basic features. |
| Gun Details |
| The most obvious differences between D&L Sports™’ CQB carbine and others are the handguard and stock, so we’ll start there. The D&L handguard appears to be a free-floating tube with vent holes for cooling—and the larger ones are just that. The smaller holes, however, are for mounting MIL-STD- 1913 rails. Lauck’s thinking was that if the rails aren’t needed in some locations on the handguard, there is no necessity to have them there, since many shooters find them uncomfortable, and when covers are in place the tube is too large for those with small hands. So D&L Sports™ CQB carbines come without rails over their entire length, although short rails are in place because for CQB use, optics and accessories are the norm. The user can, however, mount additional rails where he or she wants for mounting other accessories and have a smooth, comfortable gripping surface where they aren’t needed. Unlike some other free-floating tubes that can possibly “shoot loose,” Lauck’s are locked to the upper receiver and cannot loosen unintentionally. Lauck’s handguards are also available as aftermarket items for any AR-type rifle or carbine to accommodate any barrel length. |
| The second eye-catching item of D&L Sports™’ CQB AR is the patent- pending adjustable stock, again different from any other. The stock is constructed from thick-walled aluminum for durability and light weight. The stock was designed with entry teams in mind because these organizations wear a variety of gear and body armor of varying thicknesses, necessitating an adjustable stock. Conventional adjustable stocks have many issues, including rattling, bending, denting and being subject to breaking under hard use; such as striking the butt on the ground to help open a stuck bolt, or aggressively using the stock in a CQB situation. Not only can the stock be thusly broken, the buffer tube can be bent as well. In addition, standard buffer tubes are retained only by a light lock ring that may loosen under hard use. The lock ring loosening can result in an inoperable weapon. Lauck approached these issues with a view in mind to develop a stock that would be as absolutely reliable and durable as humanly possible. We’d say that he succeeded. The buffer tube is machined from aluminum bar stock, finished with a thicker diameter than standard tubes. The butt is machined from solid aluminum block to withstand just about any abuse a military or law enforcement user can subject it. The bottom and rear are deeply checkered for traction against vest material. The butt is lightened by material removal that allows for correct sling attachment and is contoured to facilitate a comfortable and secure grip for CQB operations. If necessary, the butt can be removed for cleaning and maintenance. The sliding butt is retained in place with dual crossbolts that absolutely prevent unintentional stock collapse. Dave Lauck also eliminates the light-duty locking ring by machining a shoulder onto the buffer tube. This is timed during installation to form a solid indexed connection with the lower receiver. Finally, a bottom index bracket ensures that the entire assembly is firmly locked in place via a heavy-duty connection. |
| For enhanced handling, Lauck designed his own vertical foregrip. Dave’s foregrip is machined from solid Delrin and retained by two Allen head crossbolts for positive retention. The grip compartment will hold a complete AR bolt assembly and a spare firing pin or two spare batteries, either AA or 123A. The rear pistol grip was replaced by a Grip with molded-in finger grooves and textured surface for positive grip. The Grip has a plug that fits into the base of the grip, forming a second compartment for storing small items. |
| For night operations, we replaced the standard vertical foregrip with a SureFire M900 Vertical Foregrip Weaponlight with IR filter. This versatile foregrip/high intensity light has ambidextrous momentary activation pads for the main battle light, a constant “on” switch and a momentary push switch for the two integral, low-output LEDs that are used for stealth navigation. This light emits 125 lumens of high intensity focused light for an hour and attaches to the bottom MIL-STD-1913 rail via an ARMS QD throw lever. |
| D&L CQB carbine upper and lower receivers are fitted with no discernable “play.” The lower receiver is forged 7075-T6 aluminum, while the upper is 6066-T6. The trigger is a single stage unit with absolutely no creep or backlash and breaks like snapping a glass rod at just under 4 pounds, although the trigger feels as if it were lighter. We were actually surprised when we measured the average pull weight. Lauck’s selector switch is yet another enhancement. The switch has been lengthened and widened slightly to facilitate highspeed operation, even with gloved hands. The switch is available in both right- and left-handed versions. Another improvement is Lauck’s anti-walk trigger and hammer pins, which like much else on this carbine, differ from any others. |
| D&L’s barrel is 16 inches in length with Lauck’s proprietary integral muzzle brake. This brake is a nine-port design with six side ports and three ports on top. There are no bottom ports because this reduces dust signature when shooting from prone or from a foxhole, while at the same time minimizing muzzle rise, thereby enhancing rapid-fire accuracy. Although felt recoil from any 5.56mm carbine is low, Lauck’s design effectively reduces felt recoil to practically nil. |
| Dave Lauck even designs his own 20- and 30-round magazines. Original magazines have always been problematic in terms of reliability, especially given that they were originally designed to be used only once and then discarded. Needless to say, the military considered this to be wasteful and so magazines were retained and reused, causing feeding issues. During the Vietnam unpleasantness and afterwards, we loaded only 18 rounds into 20-round magazines, and 28 rounds into the 30-rounders to enhance reliability and feeding. The green followers with a longer front bearing surface to prevent “nosedives” and enhance feeding was only partially successful and prudent shooters continue to load 28 rounds into MILSPEC 30-round magazines. |
| Lauck solved the AR magazine problem in several ways. First, he designed a completely new aluminum follower that absolutely will not nosedive or allow “bolt over cartridge base” failures to feed. The follower also has what Lauck designates “filter tracks,” which allow dirt and dust to pass by the follower. In addition, Lauck redesigned the magazine base by locking it firmly into position using screws to retain the heavy-duty aluminum floorplate that doubles as a “pull ring” for withdrawing the magazine from a pouch and retaining it while reloading. It also can be used to pull the magazine from the carbine if it fails to fall free when the release is pressed. Lauck completely redesigned the 20-round magazine by incorporating a slight curve into the design in addition to the features we have already discussed. There have been earlier curved 20-round magazines, but none has all the features of Lauck’s. |
| Our test carbine came equipped with an Aimpoint red dot CQB sight mounted via D&L’s proprietary “reality based” mount. The Aimpoint itself is in widespread military use and is one of the fastest for target engagement. Lauck’s mount incorporates dual crossbolts with hand knobs that can be tightened using a screwdriver for absolute retention and to prevent shooting loose. Another purpose is to hold the Aimpoint in perfect alignment for use with Lauck’s proprietary and innovative backup iron sight that was designed to be as fast as a pistol and as accurate as a carbine. The sight is placed forward of the optic and stays up so there is nothing to flip up or break. The sight is fully adjustable and then positively locked in place for a backup sight that is always visible and impervious to the rigors of military or law enforcement use. Lauck also replaces the post front sight with a more durable blade that complements the rear sight. The front sight simply replaces the original and, like the rear sight, the front blade is available with a tritium insert. |

| Dave Lauck is a one man show who makes his rifles and pistols one at a time to a standard rivaled only by NASA engineers. His resume would take up all the space allotted for this article. Dave turned the simple AR carbine into simply amazing. The subdued masterpiece looked too good to be true. At first touch the D&L carbine felt like a used bar of soap - smooth - not a sharp edge anywhere....the details were functional works of art. The D&L muzzle brake design reduces muzzle climb so much it felt like shooting a rimfire rifle. The D&L rear sight is built Mac truck tough. Dave's iron sights are smoother to transition to than any other sights I have tried....very natural and extremely fast. You have to try the trigger to truely appeciate it, it makes the carbine sniper rifle accurate. The D&L AR magazines are designed to function in the harshest of environments. I've written recently about utility ARs, most of which retail at 1k to 1.5k. I like plain-vanilla rifles, designed for serious Operators for serious use, and recommend them to most of my students. So long as they are operator-grade, and the manufacturer provides good customer service, I'm fine with most. I thus I have scant interest in tight, frail, temperamental, hobby-grade rifles, designed to appeal strictly to contest-shooters who are interested in seeing their names on the top of the leader-board, and in little else. I use the terms, "serious rifle" and "Operator-Grade" to describe the former.
Several premium manufacturers, most of whom I know personally, and for whom I have a great deal of personal and professional respect, offer premium-grade rifles, intended for serious use by sophisticated Operators who appreciate critical refinements, and are willing to pay for them.
Among the top of this List is Dave Lauck. Dave is a design geniuses, and is devoted to providing bona-fide Operators with guns that feature every genuine advantage currently known. I have copies of Dave's wares, and they are second to none, but they are expensive!
Dave's DLS/CQB is an extraordinarily solid car-gun. Short, slick, light, fast. It fairly defines a fighting rifle. Every sharp corner and edge is rounded-off, and the entire unit is treated with a high-tech finish that provides superior protection from the elements. Trigger is wonderful. It's a pleasure to carry and use. I carried and shot my copy all last week at an Urban Rifle Course here in CO, and I, along with everyone else who used it, loved it!
My copy is equipped with Leupold's Prismatic, zero-magnification, optic. Not much bigger than an Aimpoint T1, Leopuld's version features an AUG-style "doughnut of death," which has some real advantages. Works like a red-dot, and has a battery-module for low-light, but features an etched-glass reticle that is always there, even when batteries fail. I've learned to like it!
I'm proud to count Dave, and many others, among my friends, and I appreciate him tolerating me and patiently contributing to my continuing education.

D&L Flat Line PPC Carbine |
The D&L PPC (Professional Perimeter Carbine) was developed in the 1980s for police standoff situations which commonly occured at intermediate range: too far for the handgun and too close for a larger precision rifle. The PPC gained such an excellent reputation for performance that it was commonly acquired for competition, predators, and defense. The PPC's evolution has continued into the Flat Line carbine. | The safety selector of your AR-15/M16 style rifle/carbine must be properly fitted with other components in the trigger system to mechanically block the components of the trigger group in a properly engaged position when the selector is "on safe". (Qualified gunsmith activity required) Moving the selector to the "fire" position, intentionally or not, will obviously allow the trigger to move to the rear, the hammer to fall, and the firearm to discharge. This is of critical importance to all involved, especially to those operating with any type of sling system. Do not drop any firearm to a slung position in a careless manner. Always follow all firearm safety rules. Control your muzzle in a safe direction at all times. Do not cover your own body areas, or those of others. In the event of dropping an "on safe" firearm to a slung position, there is still the possibility of the mechanical safety being pushed to the off position, the trigger being moved to the rear, and the firearm discharging. This is especially true then you are wearing other equipment in conjunction with your carbine. Do not place loaded firearms in carry cases or the same dangerous problem may occur. |

| High volume shooters, especially in high heat environments must remember that the chamber can become super heated after a volume of fire. Leaving a live cartridge in a super heated chamber may cause the firearm to "cook off" or discharge unexpectedly, with the safety selector in any position. Clear the chamber and allow the gun to cool. If you are operating in a dangerous environment that requires near instant firearm readiness, lock the bolt to the rear with a loaded magazine locked into the magazine well while you allow the firearm/chamber to cool. If the firearm becomes needed immediately, you can simply release the bolt to chamber a round and resume firing. |

| Carbine operators should always control the muzzle direction of their carbines, especially when chambering a cartridge. The standard AR15/M16 style rifle uses a free floating firing pin which makes light contact with the cartridge's primer during chambering. |
