What Others Say About D&L Sports™, Inc.

I have been doing business with Dave Lauck for about four years. It started with the purchase of two MR-30 PG rifles. These rifles are truly a reflection of someone who thinks through and builds a reliable, accurate and dependable firearm which radiates quality. I have also purchased a 1911 and a short barreled .308. These also are just as awesome. The professionalism, helpful and friendly attitude of Mr. Lauck is really enjoyable. My brother, and I are going to take the precision rifle class this Aug. to meet Mr. Lauck and learn from the best, even though as First Family members of Front Sight, Nv.. we can take all their rifle classes for free.

SPECIAL WEAPONS
Gun Test: D&L Sports™ Precision .223
After having seen and fired the D&L rifle, we are convinced that D&L Sports™ produces what are arguably the finest AR-type rifles available. We have seen a lot of these rifles in the last 40 or so years and as of the time this is written, D&L's product is as good as it gets. We don't often use such strong language to describe a firearm, but Dave Lauck incorporates features into his guns that are to be found nowhere else. Gun Details Unlike most other free-float tubes that can possibly "shoot loose," Lauck's is physically locked to the upper receiver and cannot loosen unintentionally. The second eye catching item of D&L Sports™' Precision AR is the stock, again quite different from anything else on the market. The stock is constructed from thick walled aluminum for durability and light weight. The upper and lower receivers are fitted with no discernable "play" between them. The trigger is a single stage unit with absolutely no creep or backlash and breaks like snapping a glass rod at about four pounds, although the trigger feels as if it were lighter. We were actually surprised when we measured the average pull weight. Lauck's selector switch is yet another enhancement. The switch has been lengthened and widened slightly to facilitate high speed operation, even with gloved hands. Another improvement is Lauck's antiwalk trigger and hammer pins, which differ from any others available. Instead of "circips" that fit over the end of extended pins and rub against the receiver and may come off in hard use, or pins that lock together and cannot rotate, Lauck's have dome shaped cap screws that lock down against the pins themselves, so the pins are allowed to rotate as they were originally designed. Lauck's proprietary muzzle brake is a nine port design with six side ports and three ports on top. There are no bottom ports because this reduces dust signature when shooting from prone while at the same time minimizing muzzle rise, thereby enhancing rapid fire accuracy. As if all this weren't enough, Dave Lauck even designs his own 20 and 30-round magazines. Original magazines have always been problematic in terms of reliability. During the Vietnam unpleasantness and afterwards, we loaded only 18 rounds into 20-round mags and 28 rounds into the 30-rounders to enhance reliability and feeding. The green followers with a longer front bearing surface to prevent "nosedives" was only partially successful and to this day, prudent operators still load 28 rounds into MILSPEC 30-round magazines. Lauck solves the AR magazine problem in several ways. First is a completely redesigned aluminum follower that absolutely will not nosedive or allow "bolt over cartridge base" failures to feed. The follower also has "filter tracks" that allow dirt and other contaminants to pass by the follower. Lauck also redesigned the magazine base by locking it firmly into position using screws to retain the heavy duty aluminum floorplate that doubles as a "pull ring" to facilitate pulling the magazine from a pouch and retaining it while reloading. It also can be used to withdraw the magazine from the firearm if it fails to fall free when the release is pressed. Lauck completely redesigned the 20-round magazine by incorporating a slight curve into the design in addition to the features we have already discussed. Although there have been earlier curved 20-round magazines, none has all the features of Lauck's, which have several patents pending. We got a SWAT sniper friend to join us and conduct the accuracy testing. Shooting the Precision AR brought no surprises. The rifle came with a 300-yard target that was amazingly tight - more in keeping with 100-yard groups from lesser rifles. We were admonished by Dave Lauck to use only the best match grade ammo available. He tested this rifle with Black Hills 77-grain long range .223, the current choice of military special operations forces. We also tested Hornady 55-grain TAP and Remington 62-grain match ammo. It is unfortunate that we had only a 100-yard range on which to test this rifle as it is capable of engaging targets at much greater distances. How far? One of D&L Sports™' Precision ARs was the first rifle to surpass Jeff Cooper's 20/02/20 challenge - 20 rounds in less than 20 seconds into a group of less than 20 inches at 1,000 yards! The rifle used to achieve this feat was identical to our test rifle and used Black Hills 77-grain match ammo. What can we say about D&L Sports™ Precision AR? It is probably the most accurate rilfe of its type we have ever tested. It is also probably the best constructed in the finest tradition of individual custom rifles. For the tactical team seeking a semiautomatic AR-type rifle with superb accuracy, the D&L Sports™ Precision AR is an obvious choice. For the long range varmint shooter who wants the best, the Precision AR is also a clear choice. Whether or not the price of admission is worth it is a matter the individual will have to decide for himself, but the D&L Sports™ Precision AR is about as good as it gets in terms of overall accuracy and precision shooting either for sporting or tactical purposes - at any price. D&L Sports™ Precision AR represents arguably the best custom AR-type rifle available. For those who want the best, there isn't anything else. The rifle is a Shooting Machine! It is the best made AR I have ever seen. GREAT RIFLE!

This letter is to recommend Mr. Dave Lauck of D&L Sports™ of Gillette, Wyoming. My first contact with Dave was in 1997, when he built a custom pistol for me. This pistol exemplifies the attention to detail and customer service that is the essential characteristic of Mr. Lauck's work ethic. Mr. Lauck builds tools for self-defense and he takes that responsibility very seriously. Mr. Lauck is also very conscientious about supporting his customers. I've returned the pistol to him for maintenance a couple of times and he has always performed the work quickly and returned the pistol promptly. On one occasion, I received parts ordered from Mr. Lauck before my check had even reached him through the mail. The parts were urgently needed to get my self-defense pistol running again after I made a reloading mistake. Mr. Lauck is also very prompt and thorough about customer communication, returning calls in a timely manner and keeping consistent office hours. My understanding is that Mr. Lauck has been a full-time law enforcement officer for the entire time I've dealt with him. I mention this because Mr. Lauck services customers as if that's the only thing he does, when in fact he's juggling several commitments at the same time.
Very Respectfully,
JS

It is my pleasure and honor to be able to write a letter of recommendation for Dave Lauck, addressing specifically his ability to communicate effectively in order to relay his knowledge of firearms training, competition, and technology. In 2001 I drove out to the IRTC competition to view it in progress. It was so intense, and well organized that I decided to compete in it the next year, where I placed 28th out of 35 teams. In 2004 I attended Dave's Small Arms Training Academy (SASA) and completed it successfully. One afternoon when we were shooting and charting our rifles from 800 to 1000 yards, most of the other students stopped shooting paper targets, and were satisfied to be hitting small steel targets. Another shooter and I wanted to keep shooting groups on paper, and Dave personally drove us up to our targets after we shot from each 50-yard increment. He took great interest in us, reinforced us for staying on paper, and analyzed our groups. I shot in the 2004 ITRC and placed 9th out of 38 teams after learning so much in the SATA. I then returned to the IDF and passed on as much as I could of what I had learned. The IDF troops were very appreciative. I competed in the IRTC again in 2005, placing 12th out of 30 teams. What an honor it was to compete against Spec Ops teams who had recently returned from Iraq. I have never seen a better combination of informality with professionalism than in the instructor and match director personality of Dave Lauck. Safety is Job 1 for him. Running the ITRC is second nature to him, and his authority is the bedrock of the whole match -- from the shooters' meeting to the awards banquet. We shooters have absolute confidence in his knowledge, instructions, and matches. We all have the highest regard for him.
Sincerely,
WC

I have known Dave Lauck for over 10 years and have to say you would have to look very hard to find a better person. I own about 7 D&L firearms and would not use anything else. Dave's commitment to producing a quality product is unsurpassed. His customer service is excellent. I have also trained with Dave on a few occasions and his knowledge base in firearms training is exemplary. Not just text book, but real world stuff that is obviously from someone who has been there. His teaching and communication skills are evident from just talking with him, not to mention the many publications he has produced. A review of his web site also displays some of the firearms research and innovations that are attributable to Dave. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Dave's personal and professional attributes and recommend him to you without reservation.
JH, M.D.

I have known Mr. Lauck for about two years. During these past two years I have dealt with Mr. Lauck in both a personal and a business capacity. During all my business dealings with Mr. Lauck I have always found him to operate with the highest moral capacity. I have had at least three separate major business contacts with Mr. Lauck, and a number of minor ones. He has always been extremely honest and up-front in all of our business dealings. He has consistently delivered fully on all of his business commitments, and many times far exceeding the requirements of the contract. I have further had the pleasure of receiving firearms training from Mr. Lauck. As a student of his I found him to deliver highly accurate and effective communication on a broad range of topics regarding firearms training and safety. Mr. Lauck is an effective teacher and communicator. He has superb attention to detail; one example of this is his extreme concern for firearms safety at all times in all of his training venues. In summary, Mr. Lauck is an extraordinary individual with many unique skills and qualities, rarely all found in any one man. He is a skilled and dedicated law enforcement officer with bravery second to none. He is a proficient writer with many books to his credit. He is probably one of the finest gunsmith's alive in the world today. He is a superb communicator; as evidence by his highly effective teaching and training programs which help many branches of the United States Military, civilian law enforcement, and law-abiding citizens. He is as honest and trustworthy as any person has ever been. Mr. Lauck will be remembered by history as a very skilled, compassionate an gifted individual.

Dave,
I am a Deputy Sheriff in California and in the Army. I am also a LEO & military trainer. I heard about your great work this weekend from a friend who is a Seal. We went to a firearms course with a world champion instructor. All the 1911 shooters who were serious about guns recommended you.

Dave,
Just got back from Iraq. I loved your 1911 mags.
US Army, SF

Mr. Lauck,
I'm a sniper in the 10th MTN DIV on rotation in Afghanistan. I have had several malfunctions due to bad mags in the past and your mags look like the solution.

My son is a newly graduated officer with the Police Dept Academy, and is applying for certification to carry a carbine on-duty. I've given him my Bushmaster Carbon 15, but I've been plagued with problems using Bushmaster and other magazines, not a big deal for me sport shooting but critical for my son in his new profession. Research indicates the Lauck designed magazine has excellent reliability.

I've known Dave Lauck for the past two years. First as a gunsmith and second as a tactician. Looking at Dave's work you can immediately see the quality, and reading his myriad of accolades will give you a sense of who he has built guns for. My interest lies in tools that work under all conditions. Tools that are safe to use and how to make those tools as reliable as possible. I have never met anyone who takes this as seriously as Dave Lauck. Because Dave is a professional gunman and carries weapons to keep himself alive, he seems to have a different view of what's important. He's one rare gunsmith. Dave is an original thinker and by looking at his long range rifles, his sighting systems, his magazines, you'll see how his innovation has overcome common problems. He answers his own phone, is quick to reply to emails and tells you what he thinks in straight forward manner. He also works under time constraints, which is different than most other smith's.
Sincerely,
PR2 (SEAL)

I am writing this letter in reference about David Lauck. I have known him for several years and find his products to be of first rate quality, and I have two examples of his handiwork in my possession and have found these pistols, both of them 1911's to be utterly reliable. Dave is friendly, and his knowledge of weapons is best expressed in the works of art that he produces. I have the utmost confidence in his products, and with regard to the 1911 pistol, I would consider Dave Lauck to be one of very few that I would consider to be fully proficient in the gunsmithing art. I have had the dubious distinction of purchasing other pistols and have found them wanting in one category or another. With Lauck's pistols, I have no such concerns. I have put hundreds of rounds through both of the pistols that I have purchased from him, and they are accurate, and reliable. There is no higher compliment that I can confer on his work.
Sincerely,
Chief of Detectives

SUBJECT: Dave Lauck
I have been acquainted with Mr. Lauck for a dozen years or more. My association has been as a student at his Small Arms Training Academy (SATA) located north of Gillette Wyoming and as a competitor in the annual International Tactical Riflemen Championship. During most of the time I have known Mr. Lauck I was assigned as a Precision Rifle (sniper) at an 890 sq. Mile Nuclear Research Facility in Idaho. The training and practice I received under Mr. Lauck's direction greatly enhanced my abilities and tactical knowledge. The level of training was not available at the DOE site where I am employed. As a certified DOE firearms, advanced weapons, and sniper instructor I have definitely gained useful knowledge in the safe operation of a "hot" range by observation of the procedures that are part and parcel of classes and competition at the SATA. This includes square range, field shooting situations, and shoot house. With 20 yrs experience as a DOE security police officer and 4 1/2 years in the USMC I can say without a doubt that Mr. Lauck is one of the best instructors I have had the privilege of associating with. Mr. Lauck obviously speaks from a "been there" level, but is quite humble and unpretentious in his manner. I personally consider Mr. Lauck to be a true professional.

I take great pleasure in writing this letter of recommendation for David Lauck. He is one of the most insightful and innovative individuals in the fields of small arms design and training. Let's begin with his skills as an instructor. I've trained with some of the top small-arms and unarmed combat instructors on the planet over the last 36 years. I've also earned several university degrees plus about 60 credits of post-graduate work. I'm used to working with teachers at the top of their respective food chains. I've worked with more than 100 instructors, including Col. Jeff Cooper (the father of modern pistolcraft). Lauck is one of the top four instructors I've ever known in any field of endeavor. (Two of the others were active-duty British operatives teaching trade craft, and one was a scientist.) In the field of shooting skills, Lauck is by far the best instructor I've known. I say this as a nationally certified rifle and pistol instructor, as well as a military and law enforcement veteran. He has raised the bar on the training of armed professionals in long-range shooting (to 2,000 yards), tactical carbine training, and handgun training. His courses and competitions challenge and educate even the most advanced military operator. Lauck's teaching style is logical, organized , insightful, efficient, demanding, and highly effective. His innovative training enabled me to advance my skill levels at a rapid pace in a safe environment. His instruction enabled me to attain my goals and then surpass them. Much of my professional life has involved the evaluation of small arms. I've used weapons while operating under an unusually wide range of hostile and unforgiving environmental conditions. I've also seen the lessons of history lost to military and law enforcement cultures, so they make the same operational errors over and over again. Military design bureaus typically make egregious mistakes in the features they request for new and upgraded weapon systems for the same reasons. My late friend Gene Stoner and I had many discussions wondering how the military-industrial complex could habitually miss the lessons of the past. Lauck is one of the few modern designers who pays attention to the lessons of the past and incorporates the lessons of ongoing operations. He brings a refreshing, common sense approach to small-arms design that has been quite unusual aside from a few figures of history such as John Browning, Gene Stoner and Gale McMillan. Lauck's contributions to improving the accuracy and reliability of sniper rifles and tactical carbines have been frontier-pushing, as the growing pile of his patents and pending patents attests. His new technologies for the tactical carbine are simple, practical, and extraordinarily robust. As one example, Lauck's new M16/AR-15 magazines represent such a quantum jump in magazine sturdiness and reliability, that one could argue they represent a paradigm shift in small arms design. Since magazines are generally the weakest link in the reliability of any firearm, and since reliability has become a critical issue in the Sandbox, it is hard to overstate the importance of just this one contribution. Lauck has also raised the bar on the design and production of ammunition, from his potent new .45 ACP ball round, to his extraordinarily accurate .300 RUM ammunition that significantly outperforms any other manufacturer's ammunition in this caliber. A highly experienced U/C and SWAT veteran, Lauck has made significant contributions to instruction, small-arms design, optics design, ammunition design and manufacturing, and magazine design. He has written seminal works on the tactical use of firearms. The presentation-grade firearms he builds would not be out of place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His firearms for the armed professional are extraordinarily practical, reliable, accurate, and robust. Lauck is an artist, engineer, teacher, author, armed professional, natural leader, and innovative thinker. He respects the lessons of the past but is not limited by them. To say he is strongly self-motivated is to understate the case. Yet he works gracefully with people of all backgrounds and skill levels. He is an honest and honorable man. I've never met anyone who is so driven to excellence in all aspects of his life. Despite this drive, he remains well grounded and sociable. He is also dependable. Lauck is one of the few people I'd trust with my life. Dave Lauck is truly worthy of being called a Renaissance Man. I've written six books and more than 500 articles on innovative people and technologies for more than 50 publications worldwide over the last 34 years. I've been called a small-arms authority by my peers in print. Yet every time I talk to Lauck, I learn something new. That is a treat. Upon the rare occasion when we have differing viewpoints, I relish the thoughtful exchange of ideas he provides. In my opinion, he is one of the brightest minds in the field today. I have the deepest personal and professional respect for Dave Lauck on every level. He is one of only three people alive today that I'd recommend with enthusiasm, and without reservation. Respectfully,
A.P. Author, Journalist, Historian

Dave,
Everyone went crazy over your 1911 Pro Model. It got the most compliments of any of the guns I had on display.

Dave,
Both of the custom .45s shoot straight as a pipe, and run like they should. Why don't other pistolsmiths do what you do at your prices?
Thanks again,

Dave,
The .45 1911 is awesome. I train with it often. Thank you for doing such a great job.

The D&L reticle in the NX5 5.5x-22x rifle scope is rated 5 stars. I have one and like it. Nice and sharp, a really nice piece of glass. Dave Lauck put a lot of thought into this reticle
