MW2 for AR-15 Style Firearms
( magazine well #2 )
( patent pending )
There have been many ideas to improve the reloading efficiency of the AR-15/M-16 system over the years. Some good, some not so good, and some are dangerously unsafe.
AR-15 and Extreme Duty Magazines
Attaching a secondary magazine to the firearm in a fast access position has worked fairly well for many years. It allows shooters to fire until empty in an emergency, and still have a quick reload at their finger tips. The firearm can be immediately reloaded with the available magazine from the on-board carrier, then reload the carrier at a more convenient time. Loading from an on-board carrier can be much faster than digging a secondary magazine out of a flap covered pouch.
On-board carriers have ranged from plastic, canvas, Kydex, steel, and aluminum. Clamping mags together and/or duct taping them in tandem has also been popular. However, there have been drawbacks. Some units add too much weight and/or bulk. Some units don't hold the extra mag securely and it's gone when you need it. On-board pouches can be slower than on-the-person pouches. Clamping mags or taping mags tightly together runs the risk of compressing the mag bodies enough to impede internal magazine function and cause unreliability. Attaching multiple mags together also dramatically increases the weight on the firearms magazine latch. Taping or clamping magazines into opposite directions exposes the downward facing magazine to contaminants and possible damage, especially when shooting prone.
Dave Lauck considered several different methods of firearm operation before deciding that keeping the magazines separate and unattached from each other would be most efficient.
AR-15 and Extreme Duty Magazines
Consider these issues: once mags are attached to each other they no longer fit slim line pouches made for single magazines, and they become bulkier and heavier to carry. More importantly, if you shoot the primary magazine empty, and reload with the secondary magazine, you are now loaded with a single loaded mag and have no efficient way to replace the secondary emergency magazine. Keeping the mags separate, and having a well designed on-board carrier allows you to replace the secondary emergency magazine with a loaded one whenever you have a free opportunity. A well designed mag carrier will allow you to load the secondary well as quickly as loading the primary magazine will on the firearm.
Dave Lauck was not satisfied with any of the mag carriers on the market so he designed the MW2 (magazine well #2). The WM2 is not the cheapest, or the easiest to install unit on the market today. It is the best.
The WM2 is machined from a solid block of aluminum. It is heavy duty, yet light weight. It is slimlline, compact, and free of sharp edges.
The MW2 is machined to closely conform with the firearm's receivers. It is bolted to the receiver with eleven concealed and/or countersunk machine screws. It becomes a semi-permanent and very durable accessory item for your firearm.
The MW2 operates independently from, and in conjunction with your firearm. What this means is you can load individual magazines into the MW2 and the firearm's magazine well without affecting the operation of either mag well. Magazines can be loaded in any order.

The MW2 works in conjunction with your firearm's magazine release button. Conforming the MW2 closely to the firearm's receivers, and rigidly attaching it, allows the MW2 to operate with the firearms standard magazine release button. In other words, one complete push on the firearm's magazine release button will release the magazine from the firearm and from the MW2. This allow the shooter to fire the primary magazine empty, grab hold of the secondary magazine in the MW2, and push the mag release button. This drops the empty magazine from the firearm, and the secondary loaded magazine into the shooter's left hand. The shooter then simply moves the magazine over a short distance, inserts it into the firearm's primary magazine well, and releases the bolt to chamber a cartridge. The MW2 can then be reloaded with a fresh magazine when time permits.
A couple of operational notes: AR-15/M-16 magazines should always be loaded two cartridges less than their maximum capacity. This allows room for the cartridge stack to compress when the mag is seated in the MW2 or the firearm's magazine well when the bolt is forward (i.e. tactical reloads) failure to short load the mags may cause the mags not to lock in place and cause you operational difficulties.
AR-15 and Extreme Duty Magazines
If you are in a high volume fire situation and you super heat the gun before a break in the action occurs, consider reloading the firearm's magazine well, but not chambering the next cartridge if the situation permits. Keeping the bolt locked open for a while will allow the chamber to cool more rapidly. It will also lessen heat transfer to the chambered cartridge and minimize the chances of cooking off a round in the chamber unexpectedly.
The MW2 does not block the operation of the bolt release or the bolt hold open device on the firearm. No problematic lever extentions are needed.
The MW2 does not block the serial number either. A window is cut at the correct location to allow reading the number when the MW2 is in place.
The MW2 is a professional grade design that does not put clamping pressure on your receiver, and it does not reduce the area inside the trigger guard and cause problems when shooting with gloves. No shims, gaskets, or clamps are used in the MW2 design. The MW2 does not come loose, rattle, or allow the magazine to rattle.
AR-15 and Extreme Duty Magazines
Detailed research and extreme caution should go into your decision about what type of secondary magazine carrier to use. Poor designs can be heavy, sharp edged, and noisy. Even worse, some can misalign and not allow you to push the mag release button and drop the empty magazine from the firearm. If you are looking for a heavy duty, light weight professional grade secondary magazine well, the MW2 is it.
